Product & Market Intelligence (MI) is the unique provider of vital insights on consumers, competitors and markets within Volvo Car Group. We combine market research with analytics and influence major Volvo Car Group business decisions with our knowledge, insight and recommendations.
The Business Analytics team within MI is built on a mix of Data Scientists and Analysts. We take on projects which require a deeper theoretical approach, often data intensive. Right now, we have an opening for a Master Thesis student.
The project: Growth market forecast
We sell cars in a lot of markets, but there is still many markets where we don’t have a presence, or where presence is really low. In order to grow, we need to invest in these markets. Retail spaces needs to be built and we need to advertise our brand and our cars. In some markets we also need a local factory, in order to get rid of tariffs put on imported cars. In order to prioritize and choose which markets to invest more in, we look at the forecasted premium car volumes in the respective markets.
Your task will be to create a statistical model for forecasting sales at a country level, based on a number of input parameters. Input could be e.g. GDP per capita, household income and population for plenty of markets, but it’s open and one of your tasks.
Do you fit the profile?
We expect your education to be within what we call Data Science, i.e. the intersection between Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science. It can be a dedicated Data Science Master’s programme, applied mathematics, engineering physics or similar. We need you to have skills in statistics methodology, Data Manipulation, Model Selection, Machine Learning and Multivariate Analysis both in theory and practise.
We expect you to be able to work independently, but with our supervision. We work in R and Python, and we expect you to have one of these programming languages as your base.
On a personal level, you are a curious, highly motivated and self-driven individual who demonstrate a willingness to make a difference with an open and innovative mind-set. You are a team player who can also work well individually. An interest, or even background, in economics and business in general is meritorious.
- A master thesis in Sweden comprises 30 credits (ECTS), which is equivalent to one full semester
- A desired start date would be in January 2020, but it is negotiable to some extent
- The thesis should be written in English
