This thesis work will be carried out within the Fuel System department, which is a part of Volvo Car Group Product Creation and Quality organization.
The department consists of about 60 employees, all dedicated to develop a competitive solution for future cars in a stimulating working atmosphere. The fuel system department is responsible for fuel storage, refuelling, fuel level indication and delivering fuel to the engine. The department also develops systems driven by legal requirements such as the EVAP and leakage diagnostic systems for hydrocarbon emission control.
Description and Scope
Background: ORVR stands for Onboard Refuelling Vapour Recovery, which is a supplementary system to the gasoline refuelling system that is designed to capture and store hydrocarbon vapours that are emitted during the refuelling process. It contains a canister, which has a bed of activated carbon that adsorbs hydrocarbon vapours.
This thesis work aims to combine and follow up on previous thesis works at the Fuel System department. Previous works include the CFD modelling and experimental study of the refuelling process, CFD simulation of tank sloshing and the CFD modelling and experimental study of hydrocarbon adsorption in the ORVR system. The first study had excluded the effects of evaporation in the CFD study, while the second had made considerable progress in doing the same but could not complete the task due to time constraints. The present work aims to continue with evaporation modelling and include evaporation as well as detailed carbon canister modelling in the refuelling CFD model that has been set up previously.
Another aspect that had been excluded from the previous studies has been the modelling of automatic shutoff of the fuel system during refuelling, which has been shown to be a large factor in customer satisfaction. The present work lies in a part of the automotive CFD field that has been unexplored previously and would involve a significant amount of research work.
- Students that are highly motivated and have genuine interest in cars, calculations and product development.
- M.Sc. with knowledge in the area of System Control and Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics or similar.
- Experience in using Star-CCM+ or Fluent is highly valued.
- Experience in performing experimental test is considered as valuable.
- Communication skills are important since information will be needed from several different parts of the company.
- Period: 1 semester, 30 ECTS points.
- Starting date: Jan or feb 2020.
