The goal of the work is to find an electrically and mechanically feasible concept for feeding of broadband horn antennas. They should handle both transmission and reception in two polarizations at each of two frequency bands.

The feed package must be made out of waveguide components, in order to sustain high power. It should have one port towards the antenna and four ports for the 2×2 frequency bands and polarizations.

There are several interesting frequency band combinations for satellite applications, for example 14/12 GHz, 18/12 GHz and 30/20 GHz. At the onset of the work, relevant specifications should be established for the various combinations.

One can choose whether to first separate the frequencies and then the polarizations or the other way around. Thus, either one diplexer and two narrow band polarizers are needed or one broadband polarizer and two diplexers. These variants should be examined in detail and compared. What are the advantages and disadvantages with the two alternatives? Does this change between the freqency band combinations?

For one or more of the concepts, preliminary mechanical design is made. It is of prime focus to trade off mass against structural and thermal stability.

Finally, the designs are analyzed with accurate simulation software, to determine the expected performance.

The work should be a master thesis of 30 credits and the duration is 20 weeks for one student. The starting time should be as soon as possible in agreement with the student. Understanding of electromagnetic fields and antennas is strongly recommended. Relevant education is engineering, majoring in microwave technology, antennas or technical computations.
